Cross-temporal forecast reconciliation: Optimal combination method and heuristic alternatives

Forecast reconciliation is a post-forecasting process aimed to improve the quality of base forecasts for system hierarchical/grouped time series. Cross-sectional and temporal hierarchies have been considered in literature, but generally, these two features not fully together. The paper presents new results by adopting notation that simultaneously deals with both forecast dimensions. (i) closed-form expression optimal (in least squares sense) point fulfilling contemporaneous constraints. (ii) An iterative procedure produces cross-temporally reconciled alternating along one single dimension (either cross-sectional or temporal) at each iteration step. feasibility proposed procedures, first evaluations their performance as compared most performing ‘single dimension’ studied through forecasting experiment on 95 quarterly series Australian Gross Domestic Product from Income Expenditure sides.
